Summer has essentially ended and fall is here. With the departure of the shorts and sandals comes the arrival of plaid shirts and jeans. Though plaid and denim are greatly associated with fall fashion, I believe fall is associated with the start of layering season. I love it because it allows for so much creativity and also helps serve a practical purpose, keeping you warm. However, I think most guys underestimate the power of layering or don’t know how to layer.

What is layering?

Layering is the practice of having a base layer and then putting some kind of outer layer on the top. Think about when you wear a suit jacket. The button-up shirt and pants is base layer.

For example, take this outfit of Spencer in some dark slacks and white button up (below). This constitutes as the base.

Now add a suit jacket to the outfit and you’ve layered (above) Three of my personal favorites to layer with are blazers, cardigans, and overcoats.

Blazers

A blazer looks great over a nice button-up shirt. That’s also usually how they’re worn. However, I believe the potential for them is so much greater. There’s so many other things to wear underneath a blazer. Take these outfits with a black blazer for example. They show the versatility of a blazer. One uses a basketball jersey and the other uses a simple black sweater. I believe the greatest way to figure out if a blazer works well with your outfit, is to try it on. Just put on a blazer on top of whatever outfit you’re wearing that day and see how it looks.

I like mostly neutral colored blazers navy blue or black, but there’s a plethora of blazer colors. Remember to try to use complementary colors to your advantage if going beyond the standard neutral color tones of black or white. Complementary colors are colors across from each other on the color wheel. It’s a big reason why this outfit from Spencer works so well.

Cardigans

A good introduction and trick to wearing cardigans is taking an outfit that looks good with a blazer or suit jacket and replacing the suit jacket or blazer with a cardigan. Take this image for example. I felt like the grey jacket with the white shirt looked good so I replaced the outer layer with a similar colored cardigan.Cardigans are also so much more comfortable than a blazer or suit jacket.

Overcoats

I love overcoats. Especially my camel colored one. I don’t have a good trick or guide to how to wear them. I think it’s best to try and use neutral colors and wear them over button ups or sweaters. But the possibilities are endless.
